What the heck is a Surface Designer?

Basically, a surface designer

is someone who creates designs that are usually in a seamless pattern repeat that can then be applied to all kinds of product surfaces to make them more appealing and beautiful.

The wonderful thing

is that just about any surface can have a pattern design applied to it so the trade as a surface pattern designer can vary extensively. Designs can be created to go on all types of surfaces from fabrics, metal, wood, glass, paper, and even virtual ones in the metaverse. These designed surfaces can then be made into numerous products like clothing, décor, toys, paper goods, accessories, and more.

The role of a surface pattern designer

is to develop designs that consider the end product and how the patterns can enhance them. Often, a pattern can be used for more than its intended product, but for multiple different surfaces and products.

It’s amazing how pattern and color can change the look and feel of a piece.

So next time you shop, think a little more about the design and designer behind the pattern. What drew you to their work? This helps to define your personal style and chose designs that you love. It’s your life, your style, embrace it. Celebrate you!
